Business Studies KS4

Curriculum intent: The aim of the Business studies curriculum is to equip students with the appropriate knowledge and skills needed to develop their employability and identify business problems and opportunities as well as prepare them for the challenges of setting up and working in business.

The course is built around 2 themes. At the end of the course, 2 GCSE exams will be taken (1 exam per theme) through the Edexcel exam board.  

Theme 1 – Investigating small business

Within this theme students will be learning about the following topics.

Topic 1 – Enterprise and Entrepreneurship.

Topic 2 – Spotting a business opportunity.

Topic 3 – Putting business ideas into practice.

Topic 4 – Making a business effective.

Topic 5 – Understanding external influences.

In theme 1, we will be covering concepts such as balancing risk and reward, different methods of conducting and understanding market research and the importance of understanding the marketing mix.

Theme 2 – Building the business.

Within theme 2, students will be learning about the following topics.

Topic 1 – Growing the business.

Topic 2 – Making marketing decisions.

Topic 3 – Making operational decisions.

Topic 4 – Making financial decisions.

Topic 5 – Making human resources decisions.

As part of theme 2, students will be learning about how to put their business ideas into practice. This will include an understanding of the sales process, how organisations are structured and how supply function to keep businesses running.

Throughout both themes, students will be learning to understand and use business-related vocabulary and how to apply financial calculations. They will learn to analyse the effectiveness of business and offer advice to increase the effectiveness of business through real-world case studies.
