Health and Social Care KS4

Curriculum intent: The aim of the Health and Social Care curriculum is to equip students with the appropriate knowledge and skills needed to develop their employability and knowledge within the care sector.

The course has 3 components. Components 1 and 2 have coursework to complete after studying them, each of which comprises 30% of their overall grade. A final 2-hour exam makes up the remaining 40%. The course is a BTEC through the Edexcel exam board.  

Component 1 – Human Lifespan Development

Within this component students will be learning about the following:

  • The 6 different life stages and the physical, intellectual, emotional and social (PIES) growth and development that occurs at each life stage
  • Factors, Life Events and Life Circumstances which can impact on the normal PIES growth and development
  • Different sources of support including formal, informal, voluntary and multi-disciplinary

After studying Component 1, students complete 4 coursework tasks which take approximately 8 hours to complete in exam conditions.

Component 2

Within component 2, students will be learning about the following:

  • Health conditions including Type 2 diabetes, arthritis, COPD and asthma.
  • Primary, secondary and tertiary care
  • Care services for specific care users
  • Barriers to accessing care
  • Skills, attributes and values necessary in health and social care

After studying Component 2, students will complete 5 coursework tasks which take approximately 10 hours to complete in exam conditions.

Component 3

Within component 3, students will revisit some of the course content from previous components including the impact of physical, cultural, social, economic, environmental and lifestyle factors on PIES. AS well as this they will learn about the following:

  • Health indicators such as blood pressure, BMI, pulse rate and interpreting readings
  • Interpretation of data on nutrition, physical activity, smoking and alcohol
  • Person centred approaches
  • Barriers and obstacles to accessing health and social care

After studying component 3, students will sit a 2-hour exam.
